The Growing Trend In Outdoor Kitchens

There is a growing trend among homeowners to move the party outdoors closer to the swimming pool and expanded decking area around the pool.

No longer just the purview of outdoor grills, this trend offers expanded options for kitchens, dining and entertainment centers, matching the unique personality of the inside and expanding it to the outdoors.

While there are a plethera of equipment choices and options, a sound design takes into account the art of blending the design to conform to not only the architecture of the house, the harmony of material choices, size and scale, but also budget considerations.

Items to consider include type of flooring selected, countertop options, sink and water, cabinets and of course appliances.

Safety and aesthetics need to be considered when selecting the flooring material. Ideally, if adjacent to pool decking, it should match the same material used on decking, and should be sealed, so that it does not become slick and dangerous. Typical choices include, pavers, exposed aggragate, brick, natural stone and concrete, colored and stamped.

One of the more important aesthetic focal points, the countertop is the primary space for prepping food and beverages. As such, it needs to be inviting and durable, withstand all types of weather and exhibit a beautiful palette. Choices include, outdoor grade ceramic tile, natural stone like granite, travertine, marble and the durable concrete, which can be colored to contrast the flooring selected.

Utility and having the necessary equipment at hand helps with Chef’s efficiency in the kitchen.

Obviously, storage is key and having the right cabinet design adds to the efficiency. Stainless steel is a durable material that not only handles the elements well, but matches the appliances in the kitchen area. Some outdoor kitchens feature cabinets made from woods that are capable of climate changes like teak and cypress.

The choices of outdoor appliances has expanded dramatically in the past years and now rivals appliances for indoor kitchen use. Besides the cornerstone outdoor grill, other associated appliances include, refrigerators, ice- makers, sink with water, trash bin, warming drawers and pizza ovens.
